TikTok allows 2,200 characters in a caption

TikTok Caption Character Limit (and How Long Yours Should Be)

TikTok allows 2,200 characters in a caption — the same limit as Instagram, and a huge increase from the 150 characters TikTok allowed for most of its early history.

Almost nobody needs all of it. Only the first line or two appear over the video before the caption is cut off, and on a full-screen vertical video that visible space is smaller than on any other platform.

TikTok’s character limits

Field Limit
Caption 2,200 characters
Visible before truncation ~70–100 characters
Bio 80 characters
Username 24 characters
Display name 30 characters
Comment 150 characters

Hashtags count toward the 2,200. So do spaces and line breaks. Check your exact count with the character counter before posting — TikTok will silently refuse to accept text over the limit rather than warning you clearly.

The visible space is smaller than you think

TikTok captions sit at the bottom left of the screen, sharing space with your username, the sound name, and the interaction buttons on the right. Depending on device and whether the video has on-screen text, you get roughly 70 to 100 characters before the caption truncates behind “more”.

That is less than half of Instagram’s visible space. It makes the first line even more important, not less.

How long should a TikTok caption be?

Length Best for Notes
Under 100 chars Most videos Nothing truncates — the default choice
100–300 chars Hook plus context Setup line survives, detail for those who tap
500+ chars Recipes, steps, explanations Only when the caption carries real information

The important difference from Instagram: on TikTok the video is doing almost all the work. A caption that tries to explain what the video already shows is wasted space.

Hashtags, and why fewer is better

You can fit dozens of hashtags inside 2,200 characters. Do not.

TikTok’s recommendation system reads the video itself — the audio, the on-screen text, the visuals — far more than it reads your hashtags. Three to five relevant tags is enough. Twenty generic ones mostly signal low-effort posting and eat the caption space where your hook should be.

Avoid the reflex tags too. #fyp and #foryou are used on a large fraction of all uploads, which makes them close to meaningless as a signal.

Emoji count as more than one character

Emoji type Counts as
Standard emoji 2 characters
Skin-tone variant 4 characters
Flag 4 characters
Family / compound 7+ characters

This is why a caption that looks comfortably short can still hit the limit, and why counting in a notes app gives you the wrong number.

Practical rules that work

Front-load the hook. Your first 70 characters are the whole caption for most viewers. Make them a question, a claim, or the surprising part.

Do not repeat the video. If the video shows someone making coffee, “making coffee ☕” adds nothing. Add the thing the video cannot say.

Keep hashtags at the end. Never open with them — they will consume your entire visible caption.

Ask something answerable. Comments are a strong engagement signal, and a specific question gets far more replies than “what do you think?”

Frequently asked questions

What is the TikTok caption character limit? 2,200 characters, including hashtags and spaces.

How many characters show before “more”? Roughly 70 to 100, depending on device and screen size.

Can I edit a TikTok caption after posting? Yes, within seven days of posting. After that the caption is locked.

Do longer captions get more views? Length is not a ranking factor. Watch time, completion rate, and engagement are what matter.

Is the limit different for TikTok Stories or photo posts? Photo posts use the same 2,200-character caption limit. Stories allow much less.
