You saved an image and nothing will open it

This is how most people end up here. You right-clicked an image on a website, saved it, and got a .webp file that Photoshop refuses to open, Word will not place, and the printing shop cannot use. The image is fine — it is just in a format built for browsers rather than for desktop software.

Converting it to JPG solves the problem in one step, and the result opens in anything.

How to convert WebP to JPG

3. Keep the quality at 85% or higher — this file has been compressed once already.

What you lose in the swap

Transparency. If the WebP had a transparent background — common for logos and product cut-outs — JPG cannot keep it. Those areas become white. If you need the transparency, convert to PNG instead; the option is in the format menu above.

Some file size. JPG is less efficient, so the same image usually comes out 20–40% larger. That is the price of universal compatibility.

Animation. WebP can hold animation like a GIF. Converting to JPG keeps only the first frame.

Stopping the problem at the source

Browsers serve WebP because the website asked them to, not because of a setting on your computer, so there is no switch to flip. What sometimes works is right-clicking the image and choosing Open image in new tab before saving — some sites serve the original JPG at that address.

Worth remembering: an image on someone else’s website is usually their copyright. Converting the format does not change who owns it.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting improve the image?

No. Detail lost during the original compression cannot be recovered. Converting changes the container, not the contents.

My WebP has a transparent background — what should I use?

Choose PNG in the format menu. It keeps transparency and opens in nearly as much software as JPG.

Can I convert a whole folder?
